Visaranai, which won several awards including three National Awards, has been dubbed and released in Telugu as Vicharana.
The Telugu theatrical rights for this film have been acquired by Kalpana Koneru. Talking about the film, she had said in an interview, “It's an award winning film and is related to the Telugu people too. It explores the dark side of our society and is based on a true incident.”
While the Tamil version was released in India in 2016, Kalpana decided to release the film now. When asked about it, she said, “Good films need a good date and with not many films releasing at present, I decided to release it now.” It may be mentioned here that the film was chosen to officially represent India for the prestigious Oscar Awards but did not make eventually.
Visaranai is a crime thriller film written and directed by Vetrimaaran. Actor Dhanush had produced it under his banner Wunderbar Films. The film is based on the novel Lock Up penned by M. Chandrakumar. It has Dinesh, Anandhi, Samuthirakani and Aadukalam Murugadoss in the lead roles. GV Prakash had composed music for Visaranai with S. Ramalingam being the cinematographer and Kishore Te editing it. It is a poignant tale of four youngsters caught in police brutality and corruption.
Visaranai won three honours: Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Supporting Actor for Samuthirakani and Best Editing for Kishore Te at the 63rd National Film Awards. Vetrimaaran and team wanted to screen the film at one of the four major festivals including Venice, Cannes, Toronto and Berlin. And they accomplished so much more than they aimed for.
It also won the Amnesty International Italia Award at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. In the 72-year history of the Venice International Film Festival, Visaranai became the first Tamil movie to premiere in the competition segment. It may be noted here that Visaranai was both a commercial as well as critical success.
