A 60-year-old man was tied to a poll and beaten by residents of a village in Karnataka’s Dharwad district for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor on Sunday.

The accused, who suffered minor injuries, was later arrested by the police.

According to police, the accused is a neighbour of the minor girl’s family. He had allegedly entered her home and sexually assaulted her when her parents had gone out on Sunday.

When the parents returned home, the victim informed her parents about the assault.

As the news spread, enraged residents of the village barged into Sangaiah’s house. They dragged him to the village square, tied him to an electric pole and beat him. He was then arrested after the village residents informed the police.

Kalghatgi Inspector Hosmath told TNM that a case has been registered under sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act against the accused, identified as Sanghaiah Osanooramatha.

In a similar incident in February, a 57-year-old man from Bengaluru was beaten up by locals for allegedly trying to sexually assault a minor girl, and was later arrested.

According to government figures, 1,827 POCSO cases were registered in Karnataka in 2016.
