As objections to the proposed Bengaluru steel flyover are getting louder, and with the state government trying to justify its stand, Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George is set to make an audio-visual presentation before state legislators and the media to convince them about the need for the Rs 1800 Crore project.
However, members of Citizens for Bengaluru have reportedly written an open letter to MLAs and MPs seeking an inquiry into the project and that it must be frozen.
The group launched ‘Call your MLA’ program to remind the legislators of the mounting public opinion against the construction of the steel flyover.
According to The Times of India, the letter points out that close to 40,000 people have signed online petition against the flyover.
“Over 1,00,000 tree-lovers expressed their opposition to the project by giving a missed call to an organisation named Jhatkaa, and more than 44,000 citizens-10,000 from north Bengaluru, the area that's supposed to benefit from the project-have voted against the project in a 48-hour referendum.”
A public interest litigation has already been filed at the Karnataka High Court by Namma Bengaluru Foundation.
The report also states that the issue has now come to the notice of Congress leaders in New Delhi, with party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary (Karnataka) Digvijay Singh making repeated enquiries about the project and the opposition by the public.
