In an incident of moral policing, five students belonging to an Udupi college were allegedly threatened by members of right-wing group Hindu Jagrana Vedike (HJV) near Kundapur on Monday evening.
Three girls and two boys, who had gone on a picnic had to be escorted to safety by the police, reported The Hindu.
The report states that members of the right-wing group had been waiting at Koteshwar village near Kundapur for the students, after coming to know of their plan. The students belonged to different communities.
When the students reached the spot, their car was stopped by the HJV activists, who then allegedly threatened them. Following the incident, the police reached the spot and rescued the students.

“The group had falsely alleged that one Hindu girl was being abducted by members of the other communities,” Naseer Hussain, Sub Inspector of Kundapur Police Station told TNM.
“Upon enquiry, we found out that all the students had come of their own will with their parents’ permission,” Hussain added.
Following the incident, eight members of the outfit were warned by the police for taking the law into their hands. Upon this, the members of the HJV protested.
Reacting to this, police registered a security case against eight members of the group under sections of 110 and 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
This isn’t the first time HJV activists have taken the law into their own hands. In 2012, around 50 members of the right-wing outfit barged into the Morning Mist Resort near Mangaluru and assaulted women and men, who were celebrating a birthday party. The activists had then claimed that the students were consuming alcohol and indulging in ‘immoral activities’.
