BJP’s Karnataka president Yeddyurappa has demanded an NIA investigation into the slogans raised at Amnesty India’s Kashmir event in Bengaluru.

Yeddyurappa was speaking at Town Hall in Bengaluru, where Bharatiya Janata Party workers had staged a protest as part of a state wide campaign. They also met the governor Vajubhai Vala on Wednesday regarding the issue.

ABVP had allegations that “anti-national” slogans were raised at Amnesty’s event in Bengaluru on August 13 on alleged rights violations by armed forces in Kashmir. A case of sedition, rioting, and promoting enmity between group was subsequently filed based on the complaint of an ABVP member.

Former Karnataka Lokayukta N Santhosh Hegde had said that there was nothing wrong in filing sedition case against Amnesty International India.

However, on Monday US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner backed Amnesty International India. He said that the US supported the right to freedom of expression for anyone, including Amnesty.

Deccan Chronicle reported that Congress MLC VS Ugrappa had dared the centre to ban Amnesty International.

He was quoted saying, “State BJP leaders, instead of lending support to protests by ABVP, should have taken up this matter with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Union home minister, Rajnath Singh and BJP president, Amit Shah, to ensure speedy ban on Amnesty International.”
