A 22-year-old man allegedly killed himself after he was brutally beaten up by a mob on Sunday evening in Puthuparambu of Malappuram district. Shahir consumed poison after he reached home. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he died on Monday morning.
Kottakkal police have registered a case against 15 people who assaulted Shahir, while he was watching Milad-un-Nabi celebrations on the street. According to police, Shahir was in a relationship with a girl and was attacked allegedly by her relatives. On Tuesday, the girl was also admitted in hospital after consuming poison.
Shahir’s relatives have alleged that he was beaten using sticks and iron rods.
Though his friends tried to rescue him, he was brutally beaten up and the mob stopped the assault only after Shahir's mother and brother arrived at the spot.
A civil police officer from Kottakkal told TNM that Shahir had told his mother that he was assaulted badly and his body was weak. "He was watching the celebrations on Sunday. Then he got a phone call, and to talk, he moved away from the crowd to a bridge nearby. By then, the mob had approached him and started beating him up. They are identified as relatives of the girl, who was in a relationship with him," said the officer.
Shahir's body was shifted to Kozhikode medical college hospital on Tuesday for postmortem.
In a similar case, in September 2018, Mohammad Sajid, 32, killed himself after he was brutally assaulted by a group of people at Kottakkal in Malappuram.The video of him being beaten up over alleged robbery, had been circulated widely on social media.
Sajid was tied using a rope while he was beaten up. He was released by the mob only after the police reached. He hanged himself in his house two days after the incident.
