The death toll in Kerala floods increased on Monday to 83, as more bodies were pulled out from Kavalappara, a place in Malappuram which witnessed a massive landslide on Thursday. On Monday, six bodies were retrieved from this site, but they have been unidentified as the bodies had decomposed.
As per the official data put out at 7 pm on Monday, there have been 83 rain related deaths in the state and about 58 people are still missing. The number of people missing include the 50 people who are under the debris in Kavalappara and another 8 people missing in a landslide site in Puthumala in Wayanad.
The highest number of people who lost their lives are from Malappuram district, with the death toll touching 27 in the district. It is followed by Kozhikode and Wayanad districts with 17 and 12 people losing their lives in these districts respectively.
Educational institutions in about seven districts in Kerala will remain closed on Tuesday as high to very high rains have been predicted. The District Collectors of Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Wayanad have declared holiday for all educational institutions from professional colleges to anganwadis in the districts.
Wayanad district collector, in a Facebook post informed that there will not be any changes in various universities and public examinations. Meanwhile, District administration of Alappuzha has specially mentioned that food distribution in anganwadis will continue in the district as usual though it will remain closed for students.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in various districts of central and northern Kerala. Orange colour warning – which implies the district administration officials to be prepared – has been declared in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur districts for Tuesday. Meanwhile yellow colour warning - implying district administration officials to be updated - has been declared in Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kasaragod districts.
The extremely heavy rains that lashed across the state had took a heavy toll on districts like Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. But on a positive note, the latest IMD release has not issued red or orange warning after Tuesday.
But warning has been issued for fishermen from entering into seas as ‘high swell waves in the range of 2.5 to 2.8 meters are forecasted till Tuesday midnight along the coast of Kerala from Pozhiyoor to Kasaragod’.
