Kerala CPI lets off MLA Geetha Gopi with a warning for daughter's heavy jewellery at wedding
The Communist Party of India (CPI)’s Nattika MLA Geetha Gopi was warned by the Thrissur district committee of the party on Thursday over the extravagant gold jewellery worn and displayed by her daughter at her wedding.
The district committee took action after the state committee had asked it to seek an explanation from the MLA. Accepting the MLA’s explanation, the committee said she should have been more careful since she was a communist leader.
The District Committee observed that the wedding had led to unwanted discussions, and disgraced the party, as per The Times of India. CPI district executive member K Sreekumar presided over the meeting. Member of Parliament CN Jayadevan, MLA K Rajan, and party district secretary KK Valsaraj were present at the meeting.
However, the committee did not take any further action in the issue.
After several images of Geetha’s daughter decked up for the wedding, donning a huge amount of gold jewellery, went viral online, the MLA had faced the ire of her own party workers.
Geetha conducted her daughter’s wedding at the Poonthanam auditorium at Guruvayur in Thrissur, and many said that the flamboyance of the wedding didn't befit a communist leader.
With criticism flowing in from several quarters, many had called this an ‘embarrassment’ to the party and cited examples of how CPI leader and former minister Binoy Viswam had conducted a simple wedding for his two daughters.
However, the MLA had reacted to media reports stating that she had only done what a parent was obliged to do for a daughter.
