In the ongoing trial of Sister Abhaya case, a forensic expert has told the CBI special court in Thiruvananthapuram that she died because of the injury inflicted on head and that it was not a case of suicide.

Dr V Kandaswamy, the 30th prosecution witness told the court on Wednesday that Sister Abhaya’s death did not have the signs of suicide. He said that of the six injuries on Sister Abhaya’s head, the deep wound in the middle part was the cause of her death, says an Asianet News report. It was Dr V Kandaswamy who gave the forensic report on Sister Abhaya’s death.

According to reports, he has also stated that the head injuries were caused by a tool like hand pickaxe.

The 19 -year-old nun, who was residing at the St Pius X Convent in Kottayam, was found dead in the convent’s well on March 27, 1992. Though initially, the Crime Branch which probed the case called it a suicide, the case was reopened by CBI in 1993 on the suspicion that it was a murder.

Dr Kandaswamy reportedly told the court that, her postmortem report did not suggest death due to drowning. If it was a case of drowning, there should have been some liquid material inside the lungs. He also reportedly stated that in such cases, their fist will be clenched tight and the person may be holding onto mud or grass. But Abhaya’s postmortem report reveals no such things, Dr Kandaswamy told the court.

He also said that there was only 300 milliliter of water inside Abhaya’s body, which is the normal amount of water a person drinks. Dr Kandasamy said that no traces of mud were found inside her body also.

As per reports, Dr Kandaswamy had given similar statement earlier to CBI investigation officers also. Trial will continue in the case on Thursday also.
