On Sunday, the ambassador of the Caribbean Island to India Oscar Israel Martinez Cordoves said that Cuba is interested in collaborating with Kerala in the fields of medicine, sports and tourism. Oscar Israel Martinez Cordoves expressed his nation’s interest to collaborate with Kerala during a meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in New Delhi on Sunday.
A statement issued by the government in this regard on Monday said that Kerala is also exploring possibilities of its doctors trained in Cuba. The Island is known for its healthcare system and medical education. The Chief Minister and the ambassador also discussed the possibility of Kerala utilizing Cuba's expertise in the health sector. The Chief Minister also hailed Cuba’s achievements in health care and medical education. Kerala Chief Secretary Nalini Netto and CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishan were also present in the meeting.
Kerala is also eyeing the huge market for spices in Cuba, especially pepper and cardamom, the government said. The state is one among the top producers of these spices. The possibility of sending sports coaches for training in Cuba was also discussed at the meeting. The Cuban ambassador conveyed to CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the willingness of his country for direct imports, provided India gives its approval. Cuba is interested in attracting investments and entrepreneurship from the state, the Cuban ambassador said.
