KFC India will switch over to edible packaging as an experiment by launching Tortilla Rice Bowls to replace the plastic bowls that are currently being used by the fried chicken giant.
In tandem with the Karnataka government’s ‘no plastic’ policy, KFC will start its experiment from Bengaluru city this week and is likely to expand it to other cities based on customer response.
Chicken and rice will be served in a tortilla base, a move that is expected to boost the sales of its ‘Rice Bowlz’ items by giving it a ‘deliciousand eco-friendly’ twist.
“We have moved from plastic to more sustainable materials like paper (bowls and glasses). We are also evaluating the move to wooden cutlery as a long term solution,” said Rahul Shinde, MD, KFC, India.
A recent report claims that the plastic packaging sector that is growing at a pace of 18 per cent per annum and is expected to touch the $73 billion mark by 2020.
