The News Minute| January 26, 2015| 12.00 pm ISTDr. Rajendra Prasad (December 1884 - February 1963) was the first President of the Republic of India. He is the only Indian President to have served two terms (1952 to 1962). A lawyer by training, his role in India's political history, the freedom movement as well as his role contribution as one of the stalwarts of the Constituent Assembly of India which prepared the country's Constitution is legendary. Born in Zeradai (Bihar) to Mahadev Sahai and Kamleshwari Devi, he studied under the tutelage of a scholar to learn Persian, Hindi and Arithmetic after which he went to the local disrtict school in Chapra. As India celebrates another year of it's journey as the world's largest democracy on Republic Day (26th January), we bring you some hitherto unseen photographs from the private albums of his oldest grandson Dr. Ashok.Gamel Abdul Nasser, second President of Egypt,  being received on 14th April,1955 by Dr Prasad, Dr Radhakrishnan and Pandit Nehru. Dr.Prasad during one of his evening strolls in Moghul Gardens in 1959. He can be seen with his granddaughter Usha, his oldest great grandson Ashok and sister.The Queen being received when she came to India in 1961. The Duke of Edinburgh, Dr.Radhakrishnan, Pandit Nehru, Mrs. Nehru and Indira Gandhi can be seen in the picture.When Russian-Soviet pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin visited the Rashtrapati Bhawan in 1961. The picture was taken in 1961 when Dr.Prasad was seriously ill and hospitalized at Sen Nursing Home in New Delhi. The entire nation was praying for his health and the Prime Minister even identified a spot where he would be cremated.  The picture has Dr. Prasad and Mrs.Prabhavati Jayaprakash Narayan, grand daughter Usha, great grandson Ashok and Goverdhan, Dr.Prasad's valet who was very much a part of the family and was called GoverdhanNana.Miraculously Dr.Prasad recovered-and the spot identified for his cremation was later on converted to Shantivan-Nehru was cremated there in 1964. In 1961 when Dr.Prasad came back to Rashtrapati Bhawan from the Nursing Home.
