What works for zombies is that they're not stuck to any one origin story
Published on

In recent decades, one movie monster that has shown surprising tenacity and even adaptability, spreading outside of its resident home in Hollywood, is the zombie. A couple of years ago, Bollywood gave rise to its first zombie flick with “Go Goa Gone”. And even Tamil cinema can boast of a zombie flick, thanks to “Miruthan”, which released earlier this year.

Unlike werewolves, vampires, and other monsters from European folklore, zombies have a distinct advantage because they’re not stuck to any one clearly defined origin story. In fact, every new iteration creates a new breed of zombie with a variety of attributes depending on what the writer, director or game-maker hopes to do with them.

This video by Top Trending gives a sense of the kind of variety that the zombie mythos covers. It’s also a sneak peek into just how much work goes into transforming a living breathing actor into a lurching undead creature that just wants to gorge on your flesh. A warning though, some of the images in the video can be quite gory.
