It was a regular Wednesday night for Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, who decided to unwind at a bar in Kansas City after a long day at work.
It was while they were enjoying their glass of whiskey that they were confronted by US Navy veteran Adam Purinton.
“He asked us what visa we are currently on and whether we are staying here illegally,” Alok Madasani, one of the victims told The New York Times.
While the two H1B visa holders initially chose to ignore Adam’s threatening questions and racial comments, Alok reported him to the manager after being continuously harassed.
“People do stupid things all the time. This guy took it to the next level,” said Alok.
The US Navy veteran was then escorted out of the bar. But he returned a few hours later, this time armed with a gun.
Before going on his shooting rampage at the crowded bar, Purinton reportedly shouted, “Get out of my country,” as he went on to kill Srinivas and injure Alok and Ian Grillot.
Srinivas and Alok were engineers working for Garmin, a GPS device maker in the US.
Adam has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.
While Srinivas’ body is expected to reach Hyderabad on Monday night, the latest shooting has raised questions over the safety of Indian immigrants living in the US.
